GS1 has a set of standards that are used to uniquely identify items, services, logistic units, consignments, assets, documents, relationships, parties and locations in the supply chain. This set of glogal standards form what is referred to as the GS1 system. No matter the location of a business in the world or the language, trading partners can always understand each other using the GS1 standards.
If you entered any supermarket you will find almost every item packaghing has a barcode printed on it. These barcodes are used to maintain inventory records in retail chains. The use of barcodes in supermarket checkout system has automated the whole process world wide. The barcodes are machine readable and they can be programmed with a point of sale system to be used for inventory purposes. Infact now a days most retail outlets insist that before they put ny manufacturers products on their shelves, they need to be barcoded.
Ever since the barcode on a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum was scanned at a supermarket in Ohio in 1974, GS1 has made a significant contribution to the efficiency of the retail supply chain and the overall growth of the retail industry.Manufacturers and retailers established GS1 to enable them to agree to mutually beneficial standards
